Muscle Testing Workshop
Date: 8th & 9th March 2025
Time: 0900 - 1700
Duration: 2 Days (14 hours)
Cost: £175 per day (£50 discount to SMTO members)

This would be covered to assist the therapist in their clinical assessment skills. Attendees would review the principles of muscle strength and muscle length testing, looking at identifying weak (phasic) and tight (tonic) muscles respectively.
A selection of upper and lower limb muscles will be reviewed, identifying how the therapist can interpret these tests, and how to incorporate them in to a typical clinical assessment.
The workshop is open to manual therapists holding a SCQF Level 8 / Level 4 Remedial and Sports Massage qualification and above.
Sports Taping Workshop (Traditional & Kinesiology-Taping methods)
Date: 22nd & 23rd February 2025
Time: 0900 - 1700
Duration: 2 Days (14 hours)

This workshop is aimed at therapists working within clinical and field type environments, and would introduce the attendee to the both the traditional method of sports taping of which is still widely used, incorporating the use of zinc oxide and elastic adhesive bandage tape, as well as the newer method of Kinesiology-Taping.
The purpose and objectives, advantages and disadvantages, sports taping principles, indications and contraindications and materials used would be comprehensively covered and is primarily a hands on practical workshop aimed at providing as much experience on material handling as is possible within the timeframe provided.
The workshop is open to manual therapists holding a SCQF Level 8 / Level 4 Remedial and Sports Massage qualification and above.
Advanced Soft Tissue Techniques Workshop
Date: 24th - 25th May 2025
Time: 0900 - 1700
Duration: 2 Days (14 hours)

This workshop would review techniques such as Soft Tissue Release, Positional Release, Trigger Point Therapy and Muscle Energy Techniques/Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (what is the difference?). These would be allocated a timeframe subject to the requirements of the attendees.

Prevention and Management of Sports Injuries
Date: 20th - 21st September 2025
Time: 0900 - 1700
Duration: 2 Days (14 hours)

This workshop would review the role of the therapist in educating their patient in not only the management of an injury aside the treatment application, but on the key importance of the preventing the likelihood of injury.
This will cover sporting equipment and clothing used, playing surfaces, as well as warm up and cool down routines.
The principles and stages of rehabilitation will also be incorporated from pitch-side management through to the pre-discharge testing required prior to returning to participation.

Peripheral Mobilisation Workshop
Date: 11th & 12th October 2025
Time: 0900 - 1700
Duration: 2 Days (14 hours)
Cost: £175 per day (£50 discount to SMTO members)

Using the Maitland’s model, attendees will review the functional anatomy of the six key peripheral joints of the body. The principles of the model will be covered using the joints natural movements, guided by the therapists hands to relieve pain and to increase joint range of movement.
The grades used (G1-4) are covered in detail as are the key differences between physiological and accessory movements.
The workshop is open to manual therapists holding a SCQF Level 8 / Level 4 Remedial and Sports Massage qualification (ideally with 1 years industry experience) and above.
Vertebral Mobilisation Workshop
Date: 8th & 9th November 2025
Time: 0900 - 1700
Duration: 2 Days (14 hours)

Using the Maitland’s model, attendees will review the functional anatomy of the key regions of the vertebral column. The principles of the workshop will be covering advanced assessment techniques of the regions of the spine, evaluating the signs and symptoms and identifying the relevance of neurological signs and symptoms.
The grades (G1-4) are covered as is the key application of the techniques following the natural joint movements of which are guided by the therapist hands to relieve pain and increase joint movement.
The workshop is open to manual therapists holding a SCQF Level 8 / Level 4 Remedial and Sports Massage qualification (with 2 years industry experience) and above.
One Day Workshops in 2025
Soft Tissue Release Workshop
Dates: Friday 7th February 2025 OR Friday 12th September 2025
Duration: 1 Day (0900 - 1700)
Cost: £150 (10% discount to SMTO members)
This is a relatively new technique that is becoming popular among manual therapists in the UK. It can produce a quick and effective result in releasing local areas of severe soft tissue tension, hence the name Soft Tissue Release (STR).
STR is most commonly used on muscles, but can also be highly effective on tendons and ligaments as well.
The workshop is open to manual therapists holding a SCQF Level 7 / Level 3 Swedish Massage qualification and above..
Muscle Energy Technique Workshop
Date: Friday 7th March 2025 OR Friday 10th October 2025
Duration: 1 Day (0900 - 1700)
Cost: £150 (10% discount to SMTO members)
Muscle Energy Techniques (MET) is the collective name for a variety of techniques that stretch, strengthen or break down fibrous adhesions. A MET is one in which the patient's own effort and movement, rather than that of the therapist, provides the primary force in treating the problem.
The workshop will show you how you could to use the two methods of METs confidently and as part of your treatment plan.
The workshop is open to manual therapists holding a SCQF Level 7 / Level 3 Swedish Massage qualification and above.
Refresher Workshops
Date: TBC
Duration: 1-2 Days (7-14 hours)
Cost: £120 per day
These workshops would be aimed at manual therapists that are already qualified and are keen to review existing assessment and treatment techniques in a supervised and peer led environment.
Counting towards CPD points, we offer group sessions as well as sessions on a 1:1 basis.
